The Audition
Louie, a 20-year-old working class kid from the north-east, rushes to quite possibly the most important audition of his life. Before his audition can take place, he encounters fellow actors: Emma and Ollie, whose upper class arrogance and prideful ignorance threatens to derail Louie’s self-worth.
The Audition was mainly written as a way of voicing my anger at the overwhelming class discrimination rooted within the theatre industry. Back when I was auditioning to become an actor, I felt that unless you shared the same cultural capital and class experience as those “in charge” – the people who are handing out the jobs, the people who are sat auditioning you – then you really don’t stand a chance. This may or may not be true, but I wanted to tackle that issue through film. This film is my contribution to that conversation.
