The story of Port Talbot is the story of Britain’s industrial decline. It’s a community kept alive by the constant fire of the largest steelworks in Wales. Now, though, the iconic blast furnaces that loom over historic residential neighbourhoods and regenerated high streets are set to close forever. Nearly 3,000 well-paid jobs will be lost, bringing instability to an already battered regional economy.
What Next for Port Talbot? looks at why the closure of these blast furnaces is about so much more than employment. Compiled over the course of three months with input from leading community, union, political and academic voices, this multimedia journalism project captures the steel-bound identity of Port Talbot as a crucial struggle to secure its future unfolds.
