From Exploitation to Empowerment

Long read:

Leicester, once Europe’s wealthiest city that “clothed the world”, now grapples with a garment industry full of exploitation and unfairness. Despite previous media coverage of the illegalities in Leicester’s garment factories, both the government and society have been turning a blind eye to the issue. Garment workers – predominantly migrants who speak minimal English – become the biggest victims in this profit-driven industry.

From Exploitation to Empowerment: Can UK Garment Workers Change the Industry? uncovers the realities in Leicester’s garment industry and the struggles of workers to speak up for themselves, alongside an empowering story of a garment worker who bravely fought for her rights despite facing repression.

Podcast:

Democracy Under Surveillance Capitalism is the second episode of Data Daze, a podcast series on surveillance capitalism that I co-produced with four other students. As the host of this episode, I invited Jacob Mukherjee from Goldsmiths, University of London, who specialises in social movements and political communications, to be my guest. Together, we explore how surveillance capitalism impacts democracy through the case of the Israel-Gaza war.
