Sexism In The City
The feminist geographer Jane Dark once stated, “Our cities are patriarchy written in stone, brick, glass and concrete”. This radio feature, Sexism in the City: Rethinking Cities through Feminist Urbanism, questions the various realities of urban living that we have left unquestioned for far too long: narrow sidewalks, endless bathroom queues, dark alleyways and uncaring public spaces. These examples just scratch the surface. We will explore the principles and practices of feminist urban planning and discover how this approach challenges traditional city design by prioritising care, safety, accessibility, affordability and inclusivity for all. Let’s talk about the cities we need and want.
