GROWING UP IN CHINA presents a disciplined childhood in late ‘90s and early ‘00s China. The concept of collectivism was deeply rooted in educa- tion system; with an enforcement on community rather than the individual.

‘We raised hands at the same angle in class, wore the same vivid costume and rough makeup for the talent show, and drew the apples in the same colours and shape. Those of us who grew up in this period were expected to have standardised thoughts and behaviours, to be just like the rest."
