The 2020 Olympics will incorporate skateboarding as a sport with both male and female categories, yet there is a huge male dominance throughout London’s skateparks, as well as within media representation.

Missing: London’s Female Skateboarders follows ‘Cheapskates’, a female skate crew of girls who are just starting, and reflects the insecurities and feelings of intimidation and othering they’ve experienced while trying to make their space within the skateboarding community, which seems to be the case for many other females.

The piece explores some of the reasons why this sport and culture has been so male dominated, and how it’s shifting to make space for female skateboarders.
